We care for around 600 patients and their families each year. The majority come from the community all around Malta and a few come from Gozo. Most of our patients have cancer while some have motor neurone disease. Care is delivered by our multidisciplinary team whose members are trained and experienced in palliative care.
Most people would prefer to maintain their independence and remain in the comfort, security and privacy of their own home. Our home care service helps to make this possible by:
• Coordinating and complementing the skills and resources of primary health care services
• Providing pain relief and symptom control
• Offering a support system to help patients live as actively and as fully as possible
• Offering a support system to help families cope during the patient's illness and where indicated in their bereavement.
Our Day Therapy Unit provides time out for the patient, time off for the carer. It is a place where people can make new friends and discover new interests. Illness can make it harder to keep up the things you enjoy and are used to doing. Our day unit gives the opportunity to join in a range of activities and therapies. All or any of which can help to add new pleasures to life.
Day Care facilities include:
• Nursing assessments
• Crafts
• Salon
• Hydrotherapy
• Assisted bathing
• Physiotherapy
• Complementary therapy
• Occupational therapy
• Recreational therapy
• Group therapy
• Psychosocial and spiritual support
• Transport
Our Hospice trained Care Assistants sit with patients and help them with their activities of daily living. In this way they afford respite to families who need some time for rest or for other activities.
Our qualified and experienced social workers help to deal with financial worries, benefits claims, housing difficulties and other problems which may arise at a time of serious illness. They also support families facing the emotional and psychological consequences which may arise when someone close to them is very ill or dying.
Spiritual Support
Our Chaplain is available for support and counselling at the Day Therapy Unit. He visits patients at home or in hospital and he celebrates Mass and administers the Sacraments, All the team members are trained to assess and address spiritual aspects of care.
The aim of physiotherapy is to help people maintain independence and improve the quality of life. Our physiotherapist is trained in palliative care and carries out sessions in the patient's own home, at the Day Therapy Unit, in a hospital and during our weekly hydrotherapy sessions.
Gentle massage, aromatherapy and reflexology all aim to enhance quality of life. Our complementary therapist is trained and experienced in palliative care and carries out sessions in the patient's own home, at the day therapy unit, or in a hospital.
This helps people deal with functional and cognitive losses and sets realistic goals in order to achieve what is important to them. Our occupational therapist is experienced in addressing these issues. She holds regular sessions at the Day Therapy Unit and visits patients at home when the need arises.
This service complements family support and is intended for children of Hospice patients or whose parent is the prime carer of one of our patients or for children who have recently lost a parent. Activities are held during the summer months.
We have a number of items of equipment, such as wheelchairs, special beds, syringe drivers and so forth which we loan to patients. These enhance the quality of life for both patients and families.
All our services are free and are available to all our patients.
