About Us

The Malta Hospice Movement was founded on 4th January 1989 when the Founding Members, who assumed the role of the first Council of Management, formally signed the Statute which governs the Movement.

The Founding Members drew their inspiration from the work of Dame Cicely Saunders who opened St Christopher’s Hospice in 1967 and the Movement continues to model itself on her ideals.  Dame Cicely’s extraordinary contribution to alleviating human suffering has resulted in world wide recognition and the mushrooming of palliative care services across the globe.

The Malta Hospice Movement is today caring for over 750 patients and their families.Most of our patients have cancer while a small number have motor neurone disease and respiratory disease. They come from all over the Maltese Islands.

Our services to patients and their families are all free of charge. We welcome everyone and value them as unique individuals, whatever their race, religion or lifestyle.

In the words of Dr Saunders:

You matter because you are you;

 And you matter to the last moment of your life

We are a voluntary, ‘not-for-profit’ organisation. We receive around one third of our funding from the Department of Health and we need to raise the balance  to maintain our present levels of service.  This can only be done with the help of our volunteers and the generosity of the Maltese public.

Confidentiality is something we value highly
and we make every effort to maintain it.

The Multi-Disciplinary Team
The characteristic approach to palliative care

There are many complex and varied issues for patients and their families to cope with in the face of serious illness and it can be very difficult and distressing for both to come to terms with such a situation.  Our patients need help and support and this is why our services aim to address not only physical needs but also psychological, social and spiritual issues. Therefore our services are delivered by a multi professional team together with the back up of volunteers.
